Healthy Vacation Care Options from MARS Sporting Complex

Childhood obesity has been shown to have serious negative repercussions on both physical and psychological health, yet alarmingly, about 20-25% of Australian children are overweight or obese, and the proportion is increasing at an accelerating rate. Simultaneously, the aerobic fitness of children has taken a sharp downward turn. By 2020, with the current trend in weight gains, 80% of all Australia adults and one third of all children will be overweight or obese. (Australian Sports Commission, 2004)

It is suggested that children undertake a minimum of 60 minutes and as much as several hours of physical activity each day. By getting involved in organised sport, children have a much higher chance of staying active and achieving the associated health benefits.

2005 is the International Year of Sport and Physical Education, so there is no better time to set young children on a healthy course that will reap benefits for the rest of their lives. There is something out there for everyone, so by exposing children to a broad range of activities they are more likely to find something they enjoy and continue.

Five hours of a variety of sports. $9 per child.
